Local By-laws


Here you will find information on Ontario laws regarding alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, vaping, and gambling. To purchase or engage in these activities you must be of the age of majority and have valid identification. See below for valid ID requirements.

There are also rules (or bylaws) that guide the county you live in. Check out the Local By-laws links for more information about your community.

  • You must be 19 years of age to buy, use, possess or produce tobacco, cannabis or vapour products in Ontario
  • Smoking or vaping is strictly prohibited on municipal, hospital, school and playground properties
  • Smoking or vaping is prohibited in indoors workplaces, and restricted to designated smoking areas outdoors
  • You can be fined up to $1000 for breaking these rules under the Smoke-Free Ontario Act

  • You must be 19 years of age to buy, use, possess or produce alcohol in Ontario
  • Under the Liquor License Act you can be fined for Public Intoxication while walking or on a bicycle
  • Government issued identification containing your birth date is required to purchase alcohol.
  • Alcohol can be purchased at the LCBO, The Beer Store, select grocery stores
  • Alcohol can be consumed in private residences, licensed establishments such as restaurants, bars and permitted events
  • Alcohol sales are subject to additional taxes and deposits. Cans and glass bottles can be returned to The Beer Store for deposit refunds.

  • You must be 19 years of age to enter and participate in Ontario casinos, including card or table games, slot machines, horse racing and betting on sports events
  • You must be 18 years of age to purchase instant scratch tickets and play Ontario or charitable lotteries

What is considered an acceptable valid identity document?

Valid Identification must include your:

  1. name
  2. date of birth
  3. photo
  4. signature

Which forms of valid identification are acceptable?

  • passport (an international passport is acceptable if it includes the name, date of birth, photo and signature of the applicant and is accompanied by a professionally translated version if not in French or English)
  • driver’s license or enhanced driver’s license
  • government-issued identification card
  • health card ( OHIP Card)
